Deciding on a dog breed was not an easy choice. The approval to get a dog had been granted by the landlord but it had to be a small dog. I had a handful of ideas; a Dachshund, Maltese, Pug, Pomeranian… so much cute! Deciding on Chihuahuas was kind of easy though, they really aren’t that bad!
I spent hours on YouTube watching the different breeds. I wanted to see their crazy qualities. If I was going to be living with a little dog face for the next 10-15 years, wanted to know what I was getting in to. This might not sound like an easy way to make a decision but eventually there was a front runner (plus it’s a great way to spend your free time). The clear winners were Chihuahuas. They are funny as hell & cute to boot!
Here’s some golden youtube moments!
A few reasons to select a Chi
Low Cost! they are really cheap to feed – you can get them good quality good and it will cost you $10 a week max.
They Healthy! They are one of the more healthier breeds – like all dogs, they do have a list of common aliments, but overall they’re pretty tough.
They live long-time! They can live almost 18 years (much to my bulldog wanting boyfriends disgust).
I’ve got 2 Long-haired Chihuahuas, Taco (5) and Nacho (4). I often refer to them as ‘the girls’. They’re awesome company and provide hours of entertainment and love.
She’s my eldest, born in October 2008, she’s a long haired Chihuahua with a friendly temperament. This bitch loves everybody she meets and quite honestly would happily go home with any stranger she met on the street. Taco made me throw every expectation I had from chihuahuas out the window. I was expecting her to have a large case of little dog syndrome, or that I would have to spend hours disciplining her to not chew up things. I thought she would bark at everything and that she would just be a little handful…
Such the opposite. She’s friendly, outgoing, hardly ever barks, has chews up one thing of mine ever – which was a Xbox game lips (SHUTTUP I LIKE KARAOKE OK)! The naughtiest thing she has done to date was steal a friends wallet and empty the contents. She stops still when you command her too and she has a couple of cute tricks up her sleeve! such as the BANG!
She does HATE being dressed up, like she will stay still and glare at you… and she will bark, once, sternly. And again glare at you if you don’t feed her on time. She hates walks too… sometimes our adventures end in me carrying her home… Her fur gets EVERYWHERE! but ya know… she’s pretty great!
My other baby, Nacho
Nacho, she’s the clear baby of the family, and ahh… is a typical aggressive chihuahua with little dog syndrome. I got her in 2009 thinking maybe this crazy chihuahua stereotype was just a myth and that Tacos great nature would rub off onto Nacho.
Boy was I wrong! But where Nacho lacks in friendliness and behaviour, she makes up with her moxy. She’s a crazy kid who never stays still, always keen to play a round of fetch, will wear any attire and loves walks. She also puts her self to bed at night, one of the most adorable things ever. She will tunnel under her blankets and make a dog nest, and sleep through until morning.
Nacho is afraid of little kids and feet … She had a few bad experiences with small children when she was a pup and has never let the experiences go. Do not let any children pick up your puppy chihuahua. Oh the kids will beg, but it’s not worth the risk. Kids and dogs are a delicate mix! The feet thing… I really don’t get. She goes crazy bananas over them! she’s a total potato head.
I love these girls with all my heart!
Chihuahua’s are great dogs, really! If someone had told me this before I got them, I would have thought they were liars! They are kind hearted and great companions and will follow you around like a shadow. They are small enough for the best cuddles ever and light hearted little buddies who are always excited to see you after a long day of work. Totes worth it 🙂
